Alda Lilja  – Uppskera

Artists: Alda Lilja

Alda Lilja (she/they) is a queer Illustrator from Reykjavík, based in Amsterdam. Alda got a BA (Hons) degree in Illustration from Arts University Bournemouth in 2018.

Alda has done a variety of projects and client work, such as cover pages, editorial illustrations for print and online, a children’s book, zines, and a colouring book.

The main themes within the artworks are queerness and mental health/mental illness. Alda approaches her work with empathy, honesty and most importantly, with humour. The visual language often involves a lot of wild flowers and plants. The flowers and plants are a metaphor for the strength and fragility of mental health, and life in general, as well as diversity. A well tended garden needs the right care, the same goes for humans.

The works are mostly in a digital medium, but likes to play with different analog methods to deepen their practice, such as gouache, graphite, and basically anything she can get her hands on.

The drive behind the artwork is making connections and helping people feel both seen and heard.
